A journey through medieval Tuscany: from the grandeur of Pisa to the towers of San Gimignano, the "Manhattan of the Middle Ages," with a cellar stop to taste the celebrated Vernaccia wine.
From the port of La Spezia, driving alongside the Apuane Alps with a view of the famous Carrara marble quarries, the morning is dedicated to Pisa: Piazza dei Miracoli, the Leaning Tower and a stroll through the historic center. We then continue into the Tuscan hinterland, through hills dotted with cypress trees and vineyards.
San Gimignano will amaze you with its 14 medieval towers rising above the surrounding countryside. You will wander through the narrow lanes of the village, visit the main square and have time for the famous gelato by Dondoli, multiple world champion.
Before heading back, a stop at a local winery for a tasting of Vernaccia di San Gimignano DOCG — the first Italian white wine to receive a denomination of origin — accompanied by crostini and Tuscan pecorino.

Practical notes
San Gimignano is pedestrian-only: the minivan is parked outside and it is a 10-minute walk to the center. Uphill streets with medieval stone paving.
